HFM offers both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. MT5 is the newer platform, and many traders search for “HFM MT5” because the login step is where they get stuck. This guide walks through the whole process. We are not HFM: where a detail depends on your account, such as the exact server name, we show you where to find it rather than guess.
Step 1: open an HFM MT5 trading account
In the HFM client area, open a new live or demo trading account and choose MetaTrader 5 as the platform. A trading account belongs to one platform: an MT4 account cannot be used in MT5, and switching later means opening a second account. HFM then sends three things, usually by email and in the client area: your login number, a trading password, and the server name.
Step 2: download MetaTrader 5 safely
- On a PC, download MT5 from HFM’s own website or from MetaQuotes, the company that makes MetaTrader. Type the address yourself rather than clicking ads.
- On a phone, install “MetaTrader 5” from the App Store or Google Play; the developer must be MetaQuotes. Fake trading apps are a common scam.
- Be careful with look-alike sites: the UK regulator’s register lists several clones pretending to be HFM, such as hfmarketsx.com. Our HFM licence check has the details.
Step 3: log in on PC and phone
- PC: open MT5, go to File, then Login to Trade Account.
- Enter the login number and the trading password from HFM (not the password of your HFM client area).
- In the server field, type HFM or HF Markets and choose the server that exactly matches the one in your email.
- Phone: open the app, go to Settings, then New Account, search for HFM and pick the same server, then enter login and password.
- When it works, your account number and balance appear in the Navigator (PC) or on the Trade tab (phone).
Common login problems and how to fix them
| Message or symptom | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid account | Wrong server or wrong password | Copy the server name exactly from the email; use the trading password |
| No connection | Wrong server, or a network or firewall problem | Pick the right server, then try another network |
| You can see prices but cannot trade | Logged in with the read-only investor password | Log in again with the main trading password |
| Account works on MT4 but not on MT5 | It is an MT4 account | Open a separate MT5 account in the client area |
Why choose MT5 rather than MT4?
MT5 has more timeframes (21 against 9), a built-in economic calendar, depth of market and a faster strategy tester. MT4 still has the largest library of old indicators and expert advisors. If you are starting fresh, MT5 is usually the better choice; our MT4 vs MT5 comparison explains the differences in detail.
Before your first trade
Check the symbol names in Market Watch, because some accounts add a suffix to them. Then decide how much you are willing to lose on the trade and size it with our position size calculator. If your balance is small, a cent account lets you trade realistic stop distances; our cent account comparison compares HFM with other brokers.
Which HFM company holds your account?
HFM’s licences from the UK FCA, Cyprus CySEC and the Seychelles FSA are confirmed on the registers, but many traders in Asia sign up through HFM’s “/sv/” pages, which belong to HF Markets (SV) Ltd, a St Vincent company with no forex licence. Check the company named in your client agreement; our HFM licence check explains why it matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is HFM MT5 free?
Yes. The MetaTrader 5 platform itself is free; you pay the usual trading costs such as spreads and, on some accounts, commission.
Can I log in to my HFM MT4 account on MT5?
No. Each trading account works on one platform only. Open a separate MT5 account in the HFM client area.
Where do I find my HFM MT5 server name?
In the email HFM sends when you open the account and in your client area account details. Type it exactly as shown.
Disclosure: leaksfx may earn a commission if you open an account through our HFM link. Trading on margin is high-risk and most retail traders lose money.
